Building an Icosahedron

Saying that a nucleocapsid has the shape of an icosahedron is straightforward, but conceptualizing an icosahedron is another matter. You can gain a clearer understanding of this geometric figure if you build your own. Begin by making a copy of the accompanying template on a photocopying machine, enlarging it if possible. Then trace the template onto a piece of heavy paper or cardboard, such as a file folder or manila envelope. Cut out the template and fold the triangles along the lines. As you fold, bring the sides of the triangles together by matching the numbers (fold down the tabs with the numbers). Use a piece of tape to hold the sides together, or use glue on the tabs for a more permanent icosahedron. Good luck.
